Arne Austeen

Arne Austeen was born on the 1st of July 1911 in Norway.  His parents were Johan Gustaf and Ragnhild Austeen.  In their family there were six children, Hans, Ellen, Mari, Kirsten, Ragnhild and Arne. Arne's dad was well known in the town of Vestfold because he was headmaster of a farming university at Fosnes.

As a young man Arne started his university education at NTH in Trondheim. His friends from his time at the university remembered Arne as a solid character with a bright and open mind.

Arne always reacted harshly to injustice.  He always spoke what he thought without thinking of what other people would think of him for his opinions.

Arne graduated from NTH as an engineer and was then called out for military service.  Already with a big interest in aviation, he got accepted to Hærens Flyskole at Kjeller, for military pilot education.  Arne spent his military service there and got his wings, he was now a qualified pilot.

When Germany invaded Norway, Arne reported for duty.  He did not hesitate to do his part for Norway. Arne took part in the fighting in Norway until the capitulation in June 1940.  His mother had become a widow a few years earlier, so Arne went back home to help his mother and his sisters in a tough situation.

On the 4th of May 1945, only four days before the war would be officially over, Arne flew his P-51 Mustang III on a mission to the northern parts of Germany. The mission was one Arne had volunteered for.

Austeen and his squadron went down to attack the German U-boats in the Flensburgerfjord. As squadron leader, Arne dived down first towards the U-boats. This would make the task easier for the rest of 126 squadron, as most of the flak would be directed on Arne and on them.  U-155, under the command of Oberleutnant Friedrich Altmeier fired off at Arne while he dived down, guns blazing. That's when U-155 hit Arnes Mustang.

The Mustang went down towards the sea, with him still inside the airplane. In low altitude, there's barely enough time to get out. If you do get out, the parachute might not open before you hit the water anyway. No chute was reported and Arne crashed into the sea.  A tragic fate after surviving a whole four years as a fighter pilot.

Well bloggers that's all on Arne Austeen for now, and if there's anything you need let me know and don't forget to become a follower.  See-ya

Messerschmitt BF 109's

Hey blogger's,
I'm back for my second blog, this time it's on Messerschmitt BF 109's, a German fighter plane from WW2. The BF 109 is a low-winged, single-seat monoplane designed by Prof. Willy Messerschmitt in 1934. The engine in a BF 109 is a Daimler-Benz DB601. In 1937, the DB601 was used in a BF 109 that gained the world land-plane record. The Messerschmitt's nemesis is the sleek, fast, beautiful and deadly Spitfire. On my post about Spitfires I forgot to say that it is heavily armed with eight wing mounted 0.303 machine gun's, later two 20mm cannon's, then the remanning 0.303's were replaced with 50cal machine gun's. The armament of the BF 109 was one 20mm cannon in the centre of the spinner, two synchronised machine guns were mounted in the cowling, firing over the top of the engine and through the propeller. Also one 7.92mm (MG17) machine gun fitted in each wing. The cockpits of BF 109's are very claustrophobic, so if you were shot down and you just happened to have a parachute and you tried to get out................good luck to you. Some people classed the Messerschmitt BF 109 as one of the outstanding aircraft of the second world war. Thats all on BF 109's for now and remember if you need anything answered just leave a comment with the question and i will hopefully answer, A.S.A.P. And for all you people with Facebook please tell all your friends about my blog (http://warbirdfacts.blogspot.com) I'm think they will love it. Also most of the time I will have a survey running on the top of the page. see ya. ELMO=]

Spitfires

Hi Bloggers,
This is my first blog, so why not do it on my favourite warbird of all time, the supermarine spitfire.  The spitfire was the brainchild of Reginald J Mitchell, a brilliant aircraft engineer.  When Reginald J Mitchell heard that his plane had been named 'Spitfire' he commented, "just the sort of bloody silly name they would give it!"
I know of a sad story of a warbird pilot, his name is Arne Austeen.  He was a good pilot but unfortunately he was shot down by a German Messerschmitt BF109 four days before WW2 officially ended.  The early model Spitfires had Rolls Royce Merlin engines and the later models had Rolls Royce Griffin engines.  Spitfires are wonderful planes that's why they are my favourite planes.  I think they are wonderful planes because the sound of the engines, the shape of the plane and the way it flies is just amazing to watch and see.  I saw one this year at Avalon airshow which is held every two years.  When I was there I saw a Spitfire for the first time in my life but unfortunately the battery in my camera ran out before I could take a photo of it, otherwise I would post a picture of it on my blog.
The Spitfire is the most loved plane in the world so imagine how stoked you would be if you made the most successful warbird in the world.
So bloggers, that's all and if you need anything else answered leave a comment and subscribe by email so I can send you the answer and/or post it on the blog.  Next time you hear from me will be in a few days on Messerschmitt BF109's but keep an eye out because I might update this blog.
I would also like you to tell me if you like or dislike Spitfires and why.
Yours Sincerely
ELMO=]
